The Lagoa's Infamous Floating Christmas Tree
losmorris
Rio de Janeiro has the largest floating Christmas tree according to the Guinness book of records. I’m not sure how many competitors there are but I can say that the tree is very tall, very cool and entrancing to watch. I will share below some of our pictures and observations but, in fairness, feel that I must share a link to the best possible pictures one could see of this very cool event. At the end o this blog I will provide that link.

The tree is built over a period of 2-3 months before the big launch. Since we live on the Lagoa and regularly walk around it we get the opportunity to watch the construction process. But it gives us no hint of what the final product will be. Each year the designers create a lighting sequence for the tree so that it continually changes its look.

The tree is inaugurated on a Saturday on either the last Saturday of November or the first Saturday of December. The tree lighting inauguration is accompanied by fireworks, music and speeches. Last year we had a party for the event. This year we were travelling to Minas Gerais and only returned an hour or so before the lighting ceremony so, regrettably, were not able to celebrate it with friends. So this blog is the opportunity to do so!

Fireworks are part of the inaugural event but are also part of the celebration every Saturday night through Christmas.

The view from our balcony was breathtaking.

But even without the fireworks our nightly view of the tree was truly a gift to us from the city.
